Adopt-a-Plot Program

In order to keep our campus neat, clean and safe, the Adopt-a-Plot Program was developed by the Grounds Committee in 2009 to make up for insufficient funding for all PPS grounds maintenance.
The Adopt-a-Plot program is in full swing with 28 of the 32 plots taken! If you’ve not seen it, check out the map http://tinyurl.com/LHSgrounds that contains the plots and all the names of those people and groups who have adopted the plots.
This program allows individuals, families, groups of families, clubs, teams, businesses (we call them plotters) to take responsibility for a small area of the campus for the year. You can maintain the area on your own time and with your own labor or hire someone to do it for you! Contact Kirsten Leonard to adopt your plot or join in a group who has adopted a plot.
Thank you to those who have adopted plots thus far:

Plotter Frequently Asked Questions:
We’ve been getting questions from all of you “plotters!” Here are some answers.
- What supplies should we bring to work on our plot?
- What should we do with yard debris after working on my plot?
- Can we work any time? Do we need to get approval first?
- Can we do anything we want to the plot?
- Can we plant anything? Who buys plantings?
- What about the lawn at my plot?
- Will my plot be watered?
- How do I get my Community Care t-shirt? They look good!
- How do students get Community Service Credit for their time?
- How can I get more information?
- What supplies should we bring to work on our plot?
From the crews that have been working on their plots, we have learned that this is a good list of supplies to bring with you (perhaps some day we'll have all these things at Lincoln for you in an easily accessible location). Of course, this depends which plot you have and what's needed!- yard debris bags
- garbage bags (for non-compost debris)
- gloves (for everyone’s safety, heavyweight gloves are best, and always recommended)
- long sleeve shirts if you’re working on thistles, roses, or the like
- water
- wheelbarrow (for mulch work)
- shovels
- rakes
- broom & dust pan
- pruners
- eye protection
- What should we do with yard debris after working on my plot?
Please bring your own yard debris bags. You can take them home with you to be collected on trash day or you can put them next to the Lincoln High School dumpsters. If the recycling bin is empty, you can place your yard debris inside. Otherwise leave it bagged next to the dumpster and it will be taken away for composting. The dumpsters are located in “The Pit” (entrance on SW 14th between the LHS grounds and the KGW grounds) and the south entrance of the track near the concession stands. However, if your work produces a large amount of debris), please put your debris in bags or piled neatly on a hard surface (without blocking a sidewalk) and contact the LHS Grounds Committee so we can arrange for pick-up by PPS.
- Can we work any time? Do we need to get approval first?
You can work whenever you like. It’s always best to come with a buddy. You don’t need to get approval.
- Can we do anything we want to the plot?
Basic clean up and maintenance, including litter removal, weeding, pruning, and raking, is great. If you want to remove or replace significant plantings, please run your proposed plan by a Ground Committee member first (see list of names at the end of this page).
- Can we plant anything? Who buys plantings?
You can plant those things that are native or are very low-maintenance and not invasive. We have a suggested plant list, but would be happy to discuss your plans with you. There are no funds for plot plantings, but if you wish to purchase items to be planted in your plot, you can ask for a gift donation tax form from the Business Manager, Kirsten Leonard.
- What about the lawn at my plot?
PPS mows our lawns every 3 to 4 weeks, but they do not edge. We would encourage everyone to edge their lawn areas. Any debris from this project needs to be disposed of by you. If it is a small amount, please put in yard debris bags and place next to a recycling dumpster. The dumpsters are located in “The Pit” (entrance on SW 14th between the LHS grounds and the KGW grounds) and the south entrance of the track near the concession stands. However, if your plot requires a large amount of edging (which would create an unmanageable pile of debris), please put your debris neatly on a hard surface (without blocking a sidewalk) and contact the LHS Grounds Committee so we can arrange for pick-up by PPS.
- Will our plot be watered?
Plots will not be watered other than by Mother Nature.
- How do I get my Community Care t-shirt? They look good!
When you meet with your representative on the Grounds Committee, we'd like to give you a blue Community Care T-shirt (while supplies last) for all of those in your group as a small token of our thanks.
- How do students get community service credit for their time?
Students should keep a log of the hours they spend on their plot. The log should be turned in to the LHS Business Manager, Kirsten Leonard who will verify your hours. You’ll get a lot of good karma, too.
- How can I get more information?
